I began working as an Associate Attorney in 2013 at the Law Offices of Laura A. Holwell, where I focused my practice mainly in Family Law. Today I continue to focus on Family Law, as well as Insurance Law and Appellate Law, here at Holwell Law Group, LLC. One of my most notable family law and appellate cases involved an issue where the opposing party attempted to hide large sums of marital income from my client and also failed to pay child support obligations. After a two day trial, I was able to secure multiple judgments for my client totaling $182,210.69 for the income diverted from the marriage, child support arrears, children's medical expenses, children's day care expenses, and a portion of my attorney's fees. Although the opposing party appealed the decision to the Appellate Court, I was able to successfully defend against the appeal, and the judgments were affirmed.
In 2012, I graduated Magna Cum Laude from The John Marshall Law School in Chicago, Illinois. During law school, I served as a Lead Articles Editor on The John Marshall Law Review Editorial Board (Fall 2011, Spring 2012) and also obtained CALI awards for Criminal Law (Spring 2010) and Children and the Legal System (Spring 2011) for the highest grade in these classes. During law school, I gained valuable experience as a law clerk for a boutique family law firm, an intern for the Department of Children and Family Services, and an intern for the Domestic Relations Division of the Office of the Public Guardian.
Prior to beginning my legal career, I attended Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, where I graduated with Highest Distinction in 2009. I earned my bachelor's degree in English, and obtained minors in Psychology, Music, and Political Science. While studying at Purdue, I was a member of the Higher Ground Dance Company, which is a student run dance company that uses recital proceeds to raise funds for children with leukemia. As a member of the Company, I choreographed multiple ballet and jazz performances for the Company's fall and spring recitals.
I was born and raised in the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan and enjoy going back there to visit my parents, older sister, brother-in-law, and niece. I currently live on the North Side of Chicago with my pet turtle, Gumba, who is 23 years old. My favorite past times are playing the guitar, playing the piano, and attending as many concerts and music festivals as possible. As a true Chicagoan, I attend Lollapalooza every year.
I understand that issues involving divorce, maintenance (formerly alimony), allocation of parental responsibilities (formerly custody), and child support can be very emotional for the client. As a family law attorney, my goal is not only to guide my clients through the complex legal system and advise them of how the law applies to the facts of their case, but also to support them through these difficult times. I can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org or at 312-648-6155.
